Anything big starts out small

Feb 28, 2024 | Mount Vernon Triangle, Washington D.C. (USA).

For months, I looked right past it. The photo above from my office window, taken in February 2026, shows the exact view I had grown accustomed to. In fact, looking back at the original photo I snapped from the streets in February 2024, remarkably little had changed over those two years, save for the giant iPhone advertisement cycling to a newer model. From that comfortable social hub of my office building, my eyes were always drawn to those flashy ads, completely missing the masterpiece hidden in the background noise of the cityscape. It wasn't until a windy, freezing winter night while killing time during my kid's event at the nearby Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library that I found myself walking past the parking lot on I Street Northwest. As the cold rain came down, the true scale of this 135-foot mural finally dawned on me. Intricate details invisible from my warm office window, like the beehive serving as an older woman's headgear, suddenly stood out through the chill.

At the time, I didn't know this massive work was painted by German artist Hera (aka Jasmin Siddiqui) or that it was sponsored by the German Embassy and Street Art for Mankind. I just stood there in the bitter weather, captivated by my own interpretations. But the artwork itself carries a profound message painted right into its core: “Mother Nature shows us anything big starts out small. Every action counts.” You can read the artist's personal perspective on her Instagram, or learn more about the project's background via WUSA9.
